Two millennial women- a high-octane divorce lawyer and an art world innovator-circle each other in a fierce, intoxicating friendship. When one introduces a Gen-Z man into their orbit, his presence-and the Al quietly observing them-sets off a chain of desire, revelation, and reckoning. As the algorithm learns to detect even what is unsaid, they confront the surveillance of love itself.

Sonny Marwah (playwright) is a multi-media writer drawn to live theatre in an age of digital mediation. Originally a fiction writer, his short story Unchecked Baggage was adapted into a short film—but hearing dialogue live between actors and audience revealed something film’s fixed frame could never capture. With Training Set, he dramatizes our contradictory responses to technology—fascination, fear, dependence, revulsion—as part of the world we already inhabit, not some distant AI dystopia. Bringing these themes to the stage felt essential: the immediacy of live performance mirrors the tension between spontaneity and algorithmic predictability at the heart of the play. Before returning to writing professionally, Sam led creative ventures across music, publishing, and healthcare—work that deepened his belief that stories shape empathy and move people to act.

questions
Is this a sci-fi play about AI?
No — it’s not even about AI, per se. Training Set is about our human responses to AI: fascination, fear, dependence, revulsion. It’s less a story of machines than of people navigating technology in our most intimate spaces. Some see AI as a useful tool, others as a corrupting force; most of us hover uneasily in between. Every interaction becomes a small Faustian bargain — privacy or autonomy traded for ease or connection. The play doesn’t deliver a verdict. It invites the audience to witness these tensions and recognize their own responses in the mirror.
Will AI be listening?
Not to worry — we’ve asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Perplexity, and Llama to wait in the lobby. (watching an AI sneak in through the stage door) Mae, (louder) Mae, Mae (sharply) get back in here. Oh shit. (back to website visitor). No AI will be listening.
